South Korea’s offshore wind power capacity is planned increased from the current 124.5 MW to 13 GW by 2030, a target set in the Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan announced back in 2018, of which 6GW with floating wind in the Ulsan area. There is a large pipeline of projects, predominately utilizing floating foundations, off the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula.
A.Equinor has taken the lead in project Firefly (805MW) and Donghae1 / Hoopong, a total of 2.5GW,
B.Mainstream (Aker Offshore Wind) leads the way in a consortium with Korea Floating Wind for 3 areas with a total of 1.3GW of floating installations,
C. Deep Wind Offshore (Haugesund) is involved in large projects with a total of 4GW floating installations and has secured site exclusivity for 2 GW
D. Bada Energy (TotalEnergies, Corio, SK ecoplant) is developing 3 projects and a total of 2.6GW
We are now witnessing a green evolution in South Korea where offshore wind is going to play a crucial role, and the South Korean market is in an exciting phase, attracting the large international market players.
1. the Government of Korea has set the target of reaching 20 % of electricity from renewable energy by 2030, especially from solar, wind and Hydrogen, with due consideration given to mitigating possible negative environmental impact.
2. In order to achieve the goal, “Renewable Energy 3020 Project” proposed by the South Korean government, Korea is developing floating offshore wind farm complex to comply with the national energy policy, also hydrogen.
3. With an increase of OFFSHORE wind and Hydrogen Industry in South Korea, the offshore wind sector will grow significantly in 2023.
4. Projects :Shell-CoensHexicon, CIP-SK E&S.
4.1.‘MunmuBaram’ joint venture between global energy company Shell ((80%)) and Korean offshore wind developer
CoensHexicon ((20%)), aims to develop, construct, and operate a 1.3GW floating wind farm,
located offshore South-East Korea, between 65 and 80 km from the city of Ulsan, South Korea.
